What is Radon?

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas.  You can't see, smell or taste radon but it may be a problem in your home.  Radon comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe.  Radon can be found all over the United States and can get into any type of building.  You and your family are most likely to get your greatest exposure at home, where you spend most of your time.

How Serious Is Radon? 

Radon is estimated to cause many thousands of deaths each year.  When you breathe air that contains radon, you increase your risk of lung cancer.  The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.  Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths.

How To Test For Radon

Testing is the only way to know if your home has an elevated level of radon.  Testing is inexpensive and easy and should only take a few minutes to set up.  You can find a radon test in hardware stores, or we have them available at Van Rheenen Inc.  If you prefer, we can send a State Certified Radon Testing Specialist to do the testing for you.

What If My Home Has A High Radon Level?

If your radon test results are 4.0pCi/L or higher, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends radon reduction.  If you would like more information about a mitigation system for your home, Chad will come to your house and perform a visual inspection and design a system that considers specific features of your house.
